The Community Mediation Unit

Community Mediation aims to empower those involved in disputes to craft an agreement themselves so that the solution satisfies them and their community and restores the relationship that previously existed. The parties in a dispute and the community are key stakeholders.

• Community Mediation aims to engender a culture of peace in the community.

• Community Mediation means state sponsored mediation in the communities of Trinidad and Tobago.

• Generally, it deals with disputes between individuals, neighbours or groups of neighbours.

• It is a confidential, free and professional service.

• Is carried out by trained, certified independent mediators using a structured process.

• It saves the parties time and money.

• Mediated solutions create the basis for preserving and enhancing personal and professional relationships.

• If parties to a dispute can be brought together and fa-cilitated in finding a way of resolving their conflicting interests everyone will benefit.

• Such solutions would prevent the possibility of the conflict escalating into long term feuds, crime and violence.
