On 30th January, 2020, the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) lead a team of experts to evaluate the Scarborough General Hospital (SGH), which is part of the process towards accreditation of the St. Andrews School of Medicine, Tobago (SASMT). This comes on the heels of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development and the St. Andrews School of Medicine in December 2019, for the establishment of the St. Andrews School of Medicine, Tobago.

The evaluation team was led by Mr. Curtis Floyd, Director, Accreditation and Quality Enhancement, ACTT and the lead evaluator was Professor Zulaika Ali. The evaluation took place at the SGH and comprised interviews with key stakeholders, which included Councillor Dr. Agatha Carrington, Secretary of Health, Wellness and Family Development; Mr. Kumar Boodram, Hospital Administrator, SGH; Dr. Eric Hercules, President, SASMT; Mr. Patrick Knight, Chief Executive Officer, SASMT; Dr. Verleen Bobb-Lewis, Technical Advisor in the Division of Education, Innovation and Energy among others. The evaluation also entailed a tour of the teaching rooms, site visits to other satellite locations operated by the Tobago Regional Health Authority where teaching will occur, and a detailed review of documents required for the accreditation.

The St. Andrews School of Medicine is located at St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. The SASMT is a School of Medicine that will offer a Pre-Medicine programme and a Doctorate of Medicine Programme. The school will commence enrolment and teaching upon receipt of receipt of registration from the ACTT. View the SASMT website for more information on the School (www.sasm.education).
